TYVI
SPORTS PROGRAM
Sports
are an important aspect of our lives. Young people
especially love sports for recreation, exercise,
socialization and increasingly, as a means to earn
income. TYVI works with youth and sports lovers
to give young people the opportunity to explore
and use their sports talents for their own benefit
and that of the community. TYVI sponsors sports
events not only to engage young people in sports
but also as a way to involve them in development
issues such as fighting against HIV/AIDS. We also
use sports as an entry point to build youth leadership
skills. The following are TYVI's sports' initiatives:
1.
BGSU/Kenya 5K Benefit Run: This annual event fundraises
for HIV/AIDS awareness projects in Kenya and USA.
2.
Masimba Race Against AIDS Run
TYVI
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Many
Kenyan youth, especially those out of the school
system, engage or wish to engage in business as
a means of earning income. However, most of those
who start business have very little or no knowledge
in business management. Consequently, the young
businessmen and women fail to sustain their businesses
and often end up giving up in life and/or lose their
entrepreneurial spirit. Many other young people
do not even attempt to start businesses because
they do not know where to start. Furthermore, in
this era of globalization, many business young people
are ill-prepared to compete globally. To address
these issues, TYVI initiated the Harambee (i.e.,
pulling together) Business Development Program to
build the capacity of young people in business and
those who wish to enter into business. Our overall
goal is to ensure that young people in Kenya succeed
in the local and international competitive business
environment.
Specific
objectives of Harambee Business Development Program
include :
* Equipping the youth with business management
skills through training
* Exposure to local and international markets
* Linking the young businesspeople with successful
business mentors
* Creating awareness and linking youth businesses
to credit and other financial facilities (micro
credit and other banking institutions).
TYVI
EDUCATION PROGRAM
Education
is the best inheritance any society can pass on
to its youth because it gives them many social and
economic opportunities. Unfortunately, however,
many young people around the world do not have access
to education due to poverty, cultural barriers,
harsh home and school environments, disability,
unfriendly government policies, and unstable governments.
Recognizing these impediments, TYVI is determined
to help youth achieve their educational goals. The
following are TYVI's educational programs:
1.
Gusii School Performance Improvement Program:
In the past few decades, most Kenyan primary and
secondary schools, especially those in the Gusii
districts, have continued to register poor academic
performance. Recognizing that education is an
important tool in the fight against poverty, disease,
and hunger; TYVI initiated the Gusii School Performance
Improvement Program. The objective of the program
is to equip schools in the Gusii Districts with
organizational tools that can help them improve
their academic performance.
2.
Masimba Community Resource Center (MCRC)
TYVI LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
One
of the core objectives of TYVI is to strengthen
the local, national, and international youth leadership.
Good
leaders mobilize both human and other resources
to foster development. Effective leaders create
and mobilize communities to harness natural, human,
and financial resources for faster development,
inspire creativity, and provide leadership during
challenging times. TYVI provides the following
leadership programs:
1.
Global
Youth Leadership Program: This program
seeks to give youth the skills they need to be
effective global leaders .
2. Umoja
Kenya Leadership: This program provides
leadership training for current and emerging youth
leaders in Kenya. The focus of this program is
the development of youth leadership skills in
order to facilitate positive local and national
change.
3. Pamoja
Leadership for Rural Development: A majority
of people in Kenya, and many other countries in
the world, live in the rural areas. In Kenya about
80% of the population lives in rural areas. Unfortunately,
there is no government policy to develop leaders
for rural development. Pamoja (together) Leadership
for Rural Development Program is geared toward
raising leaders who can foster rural development
and also raise awareness on the need for rural
development.
TYVI
YOUTH HEALTH AND HIV/AIDS PROGRAM
Young
people today are living in a challenging health
environment. According to UNAIDS, close to 5 million
new HIV infections occurred in the year 2005 worldwide.
In the same year 3 million people died of AIDS-related
diseases; more than half (570, 000) were children.
More than 40.3 million people live with HIV today,
double the number (19.9 million) in 1995. Most of
the HIV/AIDS victims are young people who, for the
most part, are infected because of unhealthy lifestyles.
The Youth Vision International seeks to promote
health lifestyles that could help defeat these health
problems. TYVI engages the youth in the fight against
HIV/AIDS and other health related issues through
the following initiatives:
1.
Fun Exercises for Health: In this program,
TYVI shows young people simple ways they can exercise
for fun and for health improvement.
2.
Runs/Walks: BGSU/Kenya 5K Benefit Run
and Masimba Race Against AIDS Run
MAKE
POVERTY HISTORY PROGRAM
The
Youth Vision International is involved in creating
awareness among donor nations about the dehumanizing
effects of poverty in Africa. Thus, over the years,
TYVI has been petitioning G8 countries to increase
aid to Africa, open their markets to African goods,
and cancel the overburdening debts that African
countries owe the G8 and other developed countries.
TYVI is a forceful leader in the Make
Poverty History campaign.
TYVI
Awards
Every
year TYVI honors individuals, institutions and/or
organizations for exemplary contributions to the
empowerment of youth and to the eradication of
poverty. The following are some of TYVI's awards:
The Youth Leader Award, The Distinguished Philanthropist
Award, Manyibe Education Award, and Outstanding
Volunteer of the Year Award.
